With Dirk having the gravity of drawing the double team and not clogging up the paint, the Dallas Mavericks roster was able to get quality looks from their spots on the floor. For reference, the Heatles in that same year finished 6th, holding opponents to 94.6 points per game, and Celtics finishing 1st with 91.1 points per game.Īnother strength of the 2011 Mavericks was the rosters ability to hit the three pointer and finish in the paint. In the regular season, the 2011 Mavericks finished 10th in defense, holding their opponents to 96 points per game. Yes, I know that Jason Kidd (37), Shawn Marion (32), and Jason Terry (33) were old as well but Jason Kidd and Shawn Marion were still considered great-elite defenders (Lack of athleticism but high basketball IQ), with even stronger defenders in Deshawn Stevenson (a.k.a LeBron stopper but was a solid 3&D player) and their anchor Tyson Chandler (Who finished DPOY the next year in New York). The Dallas Mavericks starting lineup consisted of players covering up Dirk’s biggest weakness, his defense, especially as Dirk was 32 that year. We all know that The 2011 Dallas Mavericks’ players peaked at the right time, but we need to understand the team was a great team, with great depth, even without the players performing better than expected. Just wanted to touch on the Playoff roster as I already discussed Caron Butler not being able to play. Again, with a healthy Caron Butler, this Dallas Mavericks team could have realistically been the #1 seed going into the Playoffs. So with this “Playoffs” Mavs roster (No Caron Butler), the Mavericks should have finished with a 60-22 record, finishing 2nd in the West behind the 61-21 Spurs. To be generous, we will say that the Mavericks just beat the three lower tier teams (Raptors, Bucks, & Pacers), with the Mavs actually going 5-6 instead of 2-9 during this span. The Dallas Mavericks were definitely better than the Raptors, Bucks, and Pacers, with having arguments of the Mavericks being able to beat the Spurs, Thunder, & Magic as well. Those seven losses came up against, in order: Using the span of Games 30-38 without Dirk (And partially Caron Butler), the Mavericks went 2-7. The 2011 Dallas Mavericks are criminally underrated. (I believe the Dallas Mavericks would have gotten more wins during this span with Caron Butler healthy, but since the Mavericks won the championship without Caron Butler, I won’t use this span to show their “true” record) The Mavericks finish this span 31-13, ending the season with a 57-25 record, which was still good enough for 3rd in the West. Caron Butler also got injured in Game 32 in a loss to the Bucks, who was a important starter on the Mavs but was now out for the season (The Mavs were able to win the championship without him though).ĭirk returns but Caron Butler is still out for the season with his injury. Talking About Their Regular Season RecordĪ healthy Mavericks team had a 24-5 record at the time, which was on pace for a 67 win season, which would be the best record that season, as the Bulls finished 62-20 in the East and the Spurs finished 61-21 in the West.ĭirk is out with an injury for these 9 games, with the Mavericks going 2-7 during that span, leaving them with a 26-12 record. Don’t get me wrong, the 2011 Miami Heat was a great team and had multiple chances to defeat the Mavericks, but the Mavericks were a great team as well and had the ability to go toe to toe with the Heatles. Even if the 2011 Dallas Mavericks didn’t win the Championship, I would still consider this team one of the best in their team history. ![]() ![]() I believe that the 2011 Dallas Mavericks was arguably the best Mavericks team in their team history, which is a strong testament to why they won the championship in the first place. I just want to dispel the narrative that the 2011 Dallas Mavericks was a team that Dirk Nowitzki “carried” his team through the Playoffs and past the Heatles to win the Championship.
