![]() If you are a fan of science fiction or animation, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within is definitely worth a watch. Despite its poor box office performance, the film remains a landmark in the field of computer-generated animation. The film’s characters and story, however, were criticized for being underdeveloped. It led to the immediate closure of Square Pictures and the subsequent closure of Square USA, it ultimately led to Sakaguchis resignation, and I think theres a pretty strong argument for The Spirits Within being the main catalyst for the merger with Enix. Conclusionįinal Fantasy: The Spirits Within was a groundbreaking film in terms of its animation and visual effects. The film’s poor performance led to the closure of Square Pictures and the bankruptcy of parent company Square Enix’s Hollywood division. The film was also a commercial failure, grossing only $85 million against a budget of $137 million. While many praised the film’s animation and visual effects, others criticized its storytelling and character development. The film received mixed reviews upon release. The film’s main theme, “The Dream Within,” was performed by Lara Fabian and was a critical success. The soundtrack featured a mix of orchestral and electronic music and was praised for its haunting and emotional themes. The film’s soundtrack was composed by Elliot Goldenthal, who won an Academy Award for his work on Frida. That said, for its time, it was a delight to see in the theater. Other notable characters included Doctor Sid, voiced by Donald Sutherland, who was a scientist and mentor to Aki, and General Hein, voiced by James Woods, who was a ruthless military leader. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001) The antagonist was so blatantly signaled, you knew who it was the moment we got a full body shot of him. He was a tough and loyal soldier who cared deeply about his team. Captain Gray Edwards, voiced by Alec Baldwin, was the leader of the team of soldiers who helped Aki on her mission. Aki was a strong and intelligent woman who was determined to save the Earth from the Phantoms. The film’s main character, Aki Ross, was voiced by actress Ming-Na Wen. The film’s settings, including New York City and a futuristic version of the planet, were also visually stunning. The film’s characters had realistic facial expressions, body movements, and hair that moved realistically. The animation was praised for its realism and attention to detail. The film’s creators used motion capture technology to capture the actors’ performances, which were then translated into computer-generated characters. One of the film’s biggest selling points was its cutting-edge animation. She sets out on a quest to find the spirits with the help of Captain Gray Edwards and his team of soldiers. Aki believes that the key to defeating the Phantoms lies in finding eight spirits, which represent the Earth’s elements. The movie follows Aki Ross, a scientist who is infected with a phantom virus and has only days to live. The Phantoms are invisible to the naked eye and can only be detected by special sensors. I feel it’s inevitably going to happen at some point, so instead of rebooting actual dead people from the grave digitally *shudder*, how about rebooting what would have been the “real” first all-digital actors “career” ? It would be an amusing experiment. The film takes place in the year 2065, where Earth is invaded by alien creatures known as the Phantoms. The voice was done by an asian actor back in the day, but with machine learning tech they’d be able to synthesise an entirely new voice (and performance) I find the idea of an all CGI actor quite fascinating and whilst we do it see it in Asia with Anime singing sensations, there hasn’t been much in that way in Hollywood. And not necessarily a sci fi or action film, I’m talking something as simple as drama. She was featured in Maxim, had “interviews” done and was treated like a star, not an animated character.Įven though it makes no financial sense, from a tech/social studies perspective it would be cool to see them take another shot at using Aki Ross in a film. I was too young to remember what it was like but from all I’ve read it seems that at the time of release, there was a lot of hype surrounding the CGI and performance in the movie, and Square intended for Aki Ross to be the “world’s first fully digital actor”. It nearly bankrupt Squaresoft and let to huge changes that you can still feel today in the company, now known as Square Enix. Edit: I’m not saying to reuse the model, just the design or the “person”, of course any digital actor would have to be constantly updated to account for new advancements in CGI (topology, muscle, rigging, dynamics, texture, AI.)Īki Ross is the main character in the early 2000 movie “Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within”.
